Confessions of a Hostel Manager 3
Lost in Translation
I was going through my diary today trying and find something that was not only interesting and funny but also was clean enough to share in this my post, when I heard this almighty burst of laughter coming from the reception, never being one that does not want to share a joke I made my way to the bar to find a couple of young guys still rolling around the floor (figuratively speaking).
Once they had time to catch their breath they told me what had happened, it appears the two guys had seen lots of the Turkish Pipes (Hookah) being sold to people by street vendors out-side of bars and was asking our staff how could the police allow people to use a ‘Hookah’ but at the same time the law prohibits people from smoking in the very same bar’s?
On hearing this straight forward and honest question and after our staff member mulled it over in her mind for a few seconds and being as honest and straight forward (as is the way with most Thai’s) she explained that some bars would provide a Hooker who would smoke them inside or outside the bar for the right price, this perplexed our two young guests who after questioning the same staff member a little longer, realized that in Thailand ‘smoking’ is a crude term for oral sex and she thought they wanted a prostitute….
A great example of how two different languages and two different cultures interpret the world
