    chill, friendly
relaxed atmosphere, quiet location, airconditioned dorms
it was definitely what I expected, forthe money I paid I was quite satisfied. The bar is a great place to relax, specially in the evenings. Kristian was helpful with arranging bus travel. The staff was laid back, maybe a bit too much, the rooms were not 100% clean but maybe this is because of the low season. Generally a relaxed backpackers hostel and in high season it must be very lively too.

    “Better than other backpackers”
Had a great stay with my fiance at Asia Backpackers on Koh Chang Island. The Bang Bao area is relaxed and has some great offerings to explore. We enjoyed our stay immensely.

Asia Backpackers is really clean and is a great place to base your island adventure from, we’ll definitely be back again. Josh and the rest of his staff helped with trip recommendations, booking transport, and other local guidance. Definitely the place to stay in Koh Chang. P’A

Room Tip: Saw the hostel rooms which looked really nice, but being a couple we chose one of their nice private…

This spot was great, quite clean and new and I had a great time.. I met nice people, I could walk to the beaches nearby and to the bang bao bay with the pier, shops, restaurants.. It’s quite close to lonely beach, you can try to hitchhike, rent a bike or get a shared taxi to get there.. But walking is still far and not very safe, specially at night, cause the street has a lot of curves and is a bit narrow.. Enjoy!

    Friends getaway
    Very clean and good location
This hostel is super clean and great showers / bathroom facilities. Brand new so some building rubble about but owner is super friendly, accommodating and helpful. Short walk to Bang Bao pier and stilted village. Can cook for yourself but reasonably priced restaurant really close.

Highly recommended. Cheap, new, and clean hostel!
Asia Backpackers is a great new hostel in Bang Bao, Koih Chang. Its near the best beach IMO Oblong Koi. Great for a relaxing few days. The staff, especially Josh, are really sound. We asked to move rooms and it was no problem. There was construction going on (nothing too disturbing) and he gave everyone a discount because of the noise. No other hostels I’ve been to would do that. The rooms were extremely clean. Dorms and bungalows are both excellent value. When the construction is finished Asia Backpackers will take over this area. A+ service and accommodation. The only criticism I would have is the lack of cheap taxis to Lonely beach. The Koh Chang taxi drivers are getting greedier by the day. If Asia BAckpackers did a shuttle service it would be flawless

We stayed in the fan bungalow for 2 nights. It was good for the price but the fan not located in a good position for the bed. Other than the fact we were too hot it is definately good value for money. We moved to lovely air con bungalows for another 6 nights and it was superb. While we were there the place was still being finished off but I am sure when it is finished(which may be now) it will be a great bar and restaurant too. The couple are very nice and we were happy with the deal we got for staying. Would have be nice to have seen it finished as it was looking really good when we left. Would definately reccommend to other travellers over most places in Bang Boa. Location good for harbour and great place to eat within 2 minute walk and you can hire a bike at that restaurant too.

Loved the island, stayed here for a lot longer than i was intending to because of how beautiful it was, Very relaxing place and only a short way to get to any parties or anything, we enjoyed the small beach just down the way and the wife loved all of the restaurants nearby at very good prices. the resort was wonderful and the wifi was great after the first night the owner was working all day to get it up and running.

  21. chinny - March 20, 2014 8:51 am

Brilliant hostel stayed in many trough out asia and austraila and this is easily one of the best. I stayed In both the bungalows and the dorms and both were both excellent. The lads working here did a really good job providing a friendly and fun atmosphere. Can’t recommend enough!!

Great Staff, ZReally clean rooms and nice food. Wifi good, met some cool people there and will go back.

  23. Daniel - March 20, 2014 8:34 am

Great value for money, very clean and comftable rooms.its a short walk to pier. Most locals know it by a different name tho, the hostel used to be called elephant garden so if you can’t find it try asking for this. English guy Josh who was running the place was really nice and gave us great recommendation for sea food down at the pier, was some of the best food we’ve had in Thailand. Would defiantly stay again.

  24. Adrian - March 20, 2014 8:07 am

the location is quite strategic you can find any motorbike rent nearby, the owner was very friendly. you will have to pay for a key deposit THB 200. the bed was clean as well as the bathroom.

Get ready it’s going to be hot here…
Normally, the average temperature in March and April is in the mid-30s, according to the agency. The three-month forecast of the bureau shows that Thailand will have a hotter-than-usual summer.

This is the follow on from my first and only post on my travels in Asia, what I did not mention before and must now come clean… I am not normally a ‘backpacker’ I had viewed hostels with more than a degree of disdain and in truth stayed in my first venue on this trip to Thailand, I must also confess that my opinion has changed 100%, the hostels I stayed in were well run, more than just affordable and full of people with the same aims, to travel and see the world not as a 2 week holiday maker, without exception they all wanted to get closer to the real country they found themselves in.
My first experience of a hostel came after allowing a friend to book our accommodation, if I had known in advance I never would have agreed to stay in a Hostel, in truth this turn of events allowed me the opportunity to enjoy possibly one of the best trips I have ever had. In my last post I briefly wrote about Asia BackPackers in Koh Chang and how they changed my opinion on backpackers and backpacking, the time there was a delight and I was able to get closer to what I believe is the real Thailand, they also arranged for me to travel to Pattaya and to their nearest Asia Backpackers sister hostel, I know ‘Pattaya’ I had heard all the stories about the place, how it was full of sleazy bars and even sleazier people but as Josh stated (the owner of the hostel in Koh Chang)
“You have your perception of backpacking changed what will you lose by visiting Pattaya yes the place does have its seedier side but it also has 7+ million visitors per year who can’t all be sleazy”.
So off we went to what if I believed the hype would be the biggest brothel in the world, that’s the second time in only a matter of weeks that my preconceived, perceptions would be shattered.
More on my stay in Pattaya to follow

  31. Jamie - February 16, 2014 2:42 pm

The place was really good and the staff brilliant I would love to go back there…can not thank you all enough

While my memories are fresh I want to share them with others, the first thing that comes to my mind was my last few days of my first visit to Thailand, what a place, a jumble of noise and peace, of stark poverty and opulence, while not as in your face as Hong Kong it comes pretty close in Bangkok but out of the big cities has its own unique feel and vibe.
One of my fondest memories of backpacking was in my last stop before returning to Bangkok and that unwelcome but unavoidable flight home. Koh Chang is Thailand’s 2nd largest island and is a marine sanctuary, I would suggest it’s southern coast line is in the main still unspoilt, while the major resorts are not as packed as say Samui (possibly down to the fact that there is very little roads on this mountainous island) they have apparently double their size in only 7-8 years.
Near to the end of the ‘real’ roads on the south of the island lies Bang Bao, a small stilted functioning fishing village, with its own pier which has shops, restaurants and bars along some of its length and 3 glorious very distinct beaches, what more can you ask for!
We were lucky as we had booked our accommodation (I have learnt the hard way from previous trips never to move on unless I had booked my next hostel) before landing on the island unlike two other backpackers we met on the ferry as they were only able to find accommodation when the hostel owner we stayed with provided them with his own tent for nothing to camp the night in the hostel grounds.
‘Asia BackPackers’ ( what a great place and like their other venue I stayed at in Pattaya (that’s another story for another day) the staff were so friendly and could not do enough for you. I would recommend both venues whole heartedly, my stay with them was a pleasure and if I can (from the mouth of the terminator) ‘I will be back’

Have your say
