From the ferries to the Resort/Hostel:
On arrival at any of the ferry piers on Koh Chang, you will find mini pick-up truck taxis called Songthaews (a pick-up truck with seating running down both flanks of the rear of the vehicle), the fare is approx 150Baht, always agree the price with the driver before getting on board the Songthaews.
Getting from Bangkok to the ferries
Buses from Bangkok
The best route on time and money is the bus from Ekamai Bus Station to the Trat ferry piers, with prices around 300 Baht per person.
|Government Bus 99||Bangkok Laem Ngop||Laem Ngob Bangkok|
|07:45, 09:45||14:00 16:00|
www.transport.co.th is a good site for online bus booking but it is mainly in Thai, in true Thai style, just show up at the bus station 30 minutes before departure time and you should be fine, except on Thai Holidays and high seasons when you do need to book to ensure your seat. Buses going to Laem Ngop don’t go through Trat and will save travelling time. Do note, buses heading to Trat will often stop about 25km before Trat, when they know passengers are heading to Koh Chang, you will be asked to disembark but don’t worry, you will be put on a pickup truck taxi to the ferry pier. (This isn’t free, but you would have to pay for a pickup truck taxi from Trat to the pier anyway, and it does save you time.)
Other options: All prices are approx.
Minibuses pick up and drop off at the airport terminal itself near the Siam Beach Minibus booth at Door 8 on the ground floor at the airport. At present departures are at 07.50, 11.00 & 14.00 Ticket price for the minibus service is 600 Baht for Bangkok Airport – Koh Chang; 400 Baht for Koh Chang- Bangkok Airport and a round trip ticket is 800 Baht. Rather going direct you can break up the travel time by going via Pattaya, it takes approx. 1.30-2.00 hours to Pattaya and from there a further 3.30-4.00 to Trat. There are heaps of buses hourly to Pattaya, an added benefit for late arrivals into Bangkok and the issue with the last ferry crossings to Koh Chang. See www.asia-backpackers.com for directions to Pattaya

Flying from Bangkok to Trat:
Bangkok Airways are the owners of Trat Airport and therefore have a monopoly on the daily flights to/from Bangkok. The prices for the 40 minute shuttle service isn’t cheap, with prices from 3,100 – 3,500 Baht/person one way depending on time of year, it can be a stress free way of getting there but the costs are prohibitive. Be warned the airline has a habit of cancelling flights if they aren’t too full, something which is all too common in Asia, so do double check your flight, even in high season. www.bangkokairways.com
