March Festivals, Fairs & Events in Thailand.
It’s never easy making long term plans to see the many hundreds of wonderful festivals, fairs and special events that take place right across the Kingdom of Thailand, but to help those that are fortunate enough to be here in the ‘Land of Smiles, in what is the 3rd Thai Lunar month (March) then we hope the following helps.
Just a quick explanation as to why it is never easy to find the exact dates of the festivals. Firstly you have to understand that the Thai calendar, also known as the Dai calendar, or Tai calendar, is Thailand’s version of the Luna Solar Buddhist calendar and is used predominately across the Kingdom, but this is where the confusion starts its people will also use the Thai solar calendar or indeed the Western Gregorian calendar.
Still with me!
To make it just that little bit more confusing, some festivals and holidays are determined by astrologers or spirit doctors, with the result, that the actual dates may not be released for a matter of weeks before an event. (See more on spirits in Thailand). To throw more mud into the water, the date of an event may actually be determined by other calendars including the Chinese lunar calendar. (See more ‘Thailand Festivals Calendar Explained’)
So there you have it…….Clear as Mud!
Below is a selection of festivals, fairs and special occasions with links to the relevant Wikipedia web page, where you will find general information on the event, how to get to the province along with information on what else to do when you get there. Those highlighted in orange will link you to a more detailed description of the event as posted on our Asia BackPackers web site.
I have detailed the region along with the province so you can more easily pick an event to attend if you are lucky enough to be here in March, which is traditionally one of the cooler, temperate months of the year.
‘While some of the events may not have the most jaw dropping of names and the descriptions at times looked to have been written by a person suffering from a ‘really bad day at the office’, one thing is for sure they are all full of spectacular colours, at times deafening noise and the air is guaranteed to be filled with the mouth water aroma of freshly cooked Thai food’.
