When a man’s penis becomes fodder for domesticated animals
There is a common Thai saying, ‘I better get home or the ducks will have something to eat,’ while this may seem a nonsensical proverb to many, here in Thailand this common attempt at humour is immediately understood at all levels of society as it speaks of retribution, pain and suffering.
For almost the last half a century, the Kingdom’s unfaithful males have been living under the threat of castration, from what could be termed as an epidemic of ‘Penile Amputations’, carried out by Thai women on their cheating husbands.
Thai Physician, Kasian Bhanganada and four fellow colleagues at Siriraj Hospital in Bangkok, introduces the subject in a 1983 issue of the American Journal of Surgery. Surgical Management of an Epidemic of Penile Amputations in Siam
“It became fashionable in the decade after 1970 for the humiliated Thai wife to wait until her [philandering] husband fell asleep so that she could quickly sever his penis with a kitchen knife. A traditional Thai home is elevated on pilings and the windows are open to allow for ventilation. The area under the house is the home of the family pigs, chickens, and ducks. Thus, it is quite usual that an amputated penis is tossed out of an open window, where it may be captured by a duck.”
“Interestingly”, the physicians remark at the very end of the item, “none of our patients filed a criminal complaint against their attackers.”
It also appears that feeding the household livestock a detached baby maker is not the only way Thai ladies have of disposing of their cut offs, they have been boiled, fed to ducks and even been attached to hot air balloons to be cast into the night sky – when it comes to permanently depriving a cheating lover of his pride and joy, the imagination of the wronged Thai woman knows few bounds.
It’s not all bad news
The increased number of mutilations by Thai women has enabled the Kingdom to become one of the world’s leading authorities on sexual re-assignment surgery (SRS), in where a man’s dangly bits can be removed, enlarged and where needed; reattached.
It’s not just in Thailand
To add salt to the wound (ouch) genital slashing is not unique to the Kingdom of Thailand. The United States has had 4 cases (including the well documented John Wayne Bobbitt), while Sweden has had three cases, and the UK and Australia have also had one case each.
However, we here in Thailand have nearly 40 cases during the same time frame. China seems to be jumping in with both feet with 4 reported cases in the last 6 years alone. Which does bring to mind another old proverb ‘Practice makes Perfect’
And there you have it while this is the ‘Land of Smiles’ do note it is also the ‘Land of Unforgiving Wives’
