Ban Na kha, Handmade Silk and Cotton Goods
15 km north of Udon along Rt 2. The village is famous for selling home-woven silk and cotton garments. It is somewhat commercialized but a walk back from the road into the village and you can net some great bargains on silk and cotton.
OK so it’s not Pattaya or Chiang Mai, but Udon’s own Walking Street has its own unique youthful atmosphere. Right next to Thung Sri Muang area, between the Chinese Temple and City Hall, open every Friday and Saturday evening the road is blocked off and the market takes over, selling a vast array of local food (it would not be in Thailand if it did not have food) and handmade items it is worth the visit just to soak up the noise, smell and fun that exudes from the place.
Like every city and small town in Thailand, Udon boasts its own fresh food markets, possibly the biggest and most famous is Talat Ban Huay, which is located 5 minutes’ walk from Walking Street, it offers a huge range of fresh food and drinks and a selection of clothes and bric a brac, if you have never spent time roaming an Asian market it is worth the hustle and bustle to breath in both the aroma and the atmosphere of a living and breathing Thai market but be prepared to get hot and sweaty.
If your idea of shopping and eating is based on a western approach of Air Con and fast food outlets then the Plaza is just right for you. Formerly Chareonsri, is Udon Thani’s largest indoor shopping mall, featuring 5 floors of shopping, including a Robinson’s Department Store, Tops Supermarket, Sizzler Steakhouse, KFC, Pizza Company, Swensen’s Ice Cream, Boot’s Pharmacy, IT products, mobile phones, Major Cineplex, etc.
There is of course a multitude of 7-11 and family marts for all the small stuff or Big C centre for prices cheaper than can be found in Robinson department store.
